The Toughest Year

Buddy knew shit had to get done

And it wasn’t going to happen by itself.

Hadda take an old guy off the shelf.

Hadda teach him how to paint

How to floor and plumb

Hadda teach him why old guys who act this dumb

Better hang loose or they’ll come undone

Just twirling in a crazy wind storm.

Twisting since the day he was born.

Chewing up reality

Knowing that only he

Could get the job done.

Even if the fun

Had long left the party

And only the hearty

Cared to stick around.

The hearty could be found

Sprouting from the ground

Like a big oak tree

A tree that, like he,

Grew cones and dropped them

Nothing could stop them

This life was a problem to solve.

Much of what I write will be quite understandable to insane folks.

The rest will be, uh, less understandable...
